FEBRUARY 2022 NEWSLETTER

With the longest month January finally over I wanted to share with you the painting I’ve been working on. Having read in The Antiques Magazine that a Rene Magritte masterpiece is expected to sell for a record £45m at auction, I thought I’d try a little surrealism!

The Belgian surrealist Rene Magritte’s’ painting is described as one of the most desirable works in private hands. ‘L’empire des Lumieres’ is the title of the masterpiece, one of a succession of paintings that depicts the paradoxical image of nocturnal landscapes beneath a sunlit sky. Rene Magritte explored the theme in 27 paintings from the 1940s to the 1960s.

My homage to the series is oil on canvas and portrays a substantial house with windows that are aglow with light, the night-time scene confusing the mind with the daytime sky. I very much enjoyed the challenge and hope you enjoy my version of it!
