Van Gogh's Sunflowers
These radiant summer blooms were painted for Van Gogh's friend, Paul Gauguin. The painting really caught Gauguin's attention and he declared that: "The sunflowers with purple eyes stand out on the yellow background, they bathe their stems in a yellow pot on a yellow table. It's... it's the flower itself".
For Vincent living in Arles with Gauguin was an intense and astonishingly creative time in his life. The Sunflowers represented happiness in Van Gogh's fragile, mad and genius state.
