Vincent van Gogh

Barely needing an introduction, Vincent Van Gogh, born in the district of Zundert, Netherlands 1853. The Dutch Post-Impressionist painter, remains among the most famous and influential figures in the history of Western art. His works and legacy have shaped the modern art world, and in just over a decade he created around 2,100 pieces of art, including around 860 oil paintings, most of which he painted in the last two years of his short life.
From landscapes, still life and self-portraits, his work is unmistakably characterised by bold colours, with the use of dramatic and expressive brushwork, resulting in a unique style that we regard today as the full range of beauty, emotion and colour.
His paintings are now virtually priceless and undeniably rank amongst the most valuable art in the world, and yet, he remained poor and virtually unknown throughout his life. Ravaged by mental illness and depression, his suicide at aged 37 followed years of struggle and poverty.
“I put my heart and soul into my work, and have lost my mind in the process”
